I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you cannot find a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains isolating valve to stop all water to the house.

Once that’s done, give us a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting, remove any important items from the area, and wipe up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

The toilet has its own tap behind the toilet bowl.
