I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the water main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be there shortly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for our emergency plumber to arrive, clear away any important items, wipe up any water, and position a bucket to catch any drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
